Police and protesters clashed after hundreds of people took to streets Thursday to rally against low gas pressure and uninterrupted gas load shedding for hours. Police resorted to baton-charge and tear gas shelling to disperse the protesters who completely blocked Islamabad Expressway for traffic. The mob pelted the cops with stones and bricks.
Around 300 residents of Dhok Kala Khan, Sohan and other adjoining areas are staging protest for fourth consecutive day. The protesters carrying banners and placards, chanted slogans urging the government to ensure smooth supply of gas to different localities. The protesters were of the view that for the past several days they were facing immense problems due to low gas pressure and gas load-shedding. They said they are unable to cook food. In the absence of gas, they use electric stoves, but unscheduled power outages thwart their attempt, they added. The government has forced us to buy food from restaurants, but we cannot afford it.
A heavy contingent of police including anti-riot police, police commandoes and women cops rushed to the scene. The high-ups of district administration and police requested the protesters to disperse peacefully but the mob insisted that their demand should first be met. Rescue 1122 and fire fighters were also present to assists police in case of any situation. Owing to mess, a gigantic traffic snarl was seen at Islamabad Expressway leading to Murree Road, Pirwadhai and Faisal Avenue posing hardships for commuters for hours.
