Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reforms has reportedly asked Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to finalise its proposal on a biometric system of identification and the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) to be employed in the general election 2018.
During the demonstration of EVMs the ECP reportedly failed to provide plausible answers to parliamentarians' questions. The Nadra also reportedly refused to take responsibility to execute machines during the next elections. However, they agreed to develop a software to be used in machines.
That latest technology has become an essential condition or a thing that is absolutely necessary is a fact that has found its best expression in a wider debate in the Pakistani society. However, the real sine qua non for holding a free, fair and transparent election is the appointment of a competent, honest, dedicated and physically fit Chief Election Commissioner. All political parties must not become complacent towards this objective, although technologies make it possible to augment human performance in physical, emotional and cognitive areas.
