A large number of fishermen belonging to Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, Sanghar, Jamshoro, Karachi and Hyderabad on Friday held a joint rally to observe World Fisheries Day. The rally was organised by Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF) with a slogan of 'Action against Ocean Grabbing and Implementation of International Guidelines on Small Scale Fisheries'.
The event attracted a large number of fishing communities from right and left banks of the River Indus, besides civil society activists, who raised their voice for the protection of natural resources. PFF Vice-Chairperson Mustafa Mirani, General Secretary Saeed Baloch, Senior Vice-Chairperson Fatima Majid and Manger Programs PFF Jamil Junejo led the rally.
Carrying banners and placards, the participants were shouting slogans, sensitising the public and media about the impacts of climate change. They said that their livelihood resources were depleting drastically and ocean grabbing was compelling them towards displacement and food insecurity. They asked the stakeholders to act positively and save the natural resources.
While addressing the rally, the leaders said that "it will happen if you ignore the changes taking place around you. It is your responsibility to mobilise all to play their role in saving the earth, indigenous communities and their livelihood resources from Ocean Grabbing". They also demanded the government to stop work on mega projects at Sindh coasts and implement small-scale fisheries guidelines to protect the livelihood of fishermen.
