The 31st Governors Cup Golf Championship endorsed by Millat Tractors for the 21st year in succession commenced at the historic Lahore Gymkhana Golf Course on Friday. The ceremonial inaugural shot was hit by Ahsan Imran of Millat Tractors and from thereon the participating hopefuls and many established golfers went into a battle oriented frame of mind.
The main event of this championship is the men's amateur event, where in competing players vie for the Governors Championship Individual title with the competition extending over three days. In the contest for individual honours Jamal Nasir of Gymkhana and Usman Saleem Cheema of Lahore Garrison Golf Club share the lead at the end of the first day. Jamal was the front runner with a score of net 67 and also at the same front runners score was Usman Saleem Cheema.
These two youngsters have been putting in many hours on the golf course and the effort has yielded fruitful results. In the first eighteen holes Jamal was in total command and although he encountered some bad moments during the 18 holes, his birdies on holes 2, 5 and 7 and pars on 10 holes reflected the performance of an upcoming champion.
Other performers in the individual net category are Hamza Mansoor 68, Asif Bajwa, a former hockey Olympian, 68, Ahsan Khawaja 69,Nadeem Aslam 70, Waleed Zubair 70, Dr Dildar 71, Fakhar Imam 72,Farooq Khan 72 ,Taimur Shabbir 72,Ahmed Rafi 72, Murad A. Khan 72 and Muhammad Hassan Saeed 72. In the race for gross honours the young talent Nadeem Aslam of Lahore Garrison produced the best round of the day.
