Punjab Minister for Food and Chairman of Cabinet Price Control Committee Bilal Yasin has said that hoarding and profiteering were a social evil and the government was strictly dealing with this problem. He said the media should also keep a watchful eye on hoarders and profiteers while the people should also boycott the items which were being sold at higher than the fixed rate.
He was talking to media persons and consumers during his visit to different Sunday bazaars in Lahore. Bilal Yasin said that the administrative machinery was duty-bound to provide essential items to citizens at cheaper rates in accordance with the mechanism evolved by the government and no negligence will be tolerated in this regard. He said that magistrates undertake inspection of critical bazaars, Sunday bazaars and open market on daily basis to curb overcharging. He said prices of essential items have reduced substantially compared to the last year. He said that pulses were being imported to control the trend of increase in its prices.
Punjab Minister Bilal Yasin said that fares of public and goods transport have reduced due to decrease in prices of petroleum products while the rates of food items have also showed a downward trend. He said that 9,282 shopkeepers involved in overcharging were fined Rs 97,78,900 last week while FIR registered against 618 shopkeepers. He said that instructions have been issued to the administration to spare no one involved in overcharging and profiteering and besides imposing fine, arrests should also be made.
