Provincial Finance Minister Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman gave away laptops to Punjab University students of M Phil and PhD as part of distribution of 0.1 million laptops among position holders under the Prime Minister's youth programme. University Vice Chancellor PU Dr Mujahid Kamran, Prime Minister's Youth Programme Co-ordinator Aneeza Fatima, officials of Higher Education Commission and principals and others officials were also present on the occasion.
Rehman said that the Punjab government distributed solar lamps among 0.2 million students last year at the cost of Rs 2.5 billion under Ujala Programme so that loadshedding could not disrupt their study. Rs 274 billion will be spent on education sector during the current fiscal year which is 26.25 pc of the total budget of the province, he added.
He said improvement of higher education is priority of the government, Rs 14.5 billion have been provided for developmental work of the higher education, Rs 3.42 billion for the establishment of new colleges whereas Rs 1.36 billion are being spent on the provision of missing facilities in colleges. Rehman said financial grant is being provided for up-gradation of higher education especially to the institutions of women, new women universities are also being established in Bahawalpur, Multan, Sialkot and Faisalabad, besides three new women universities at Rahim Yar Khan, Sahiwal and Okara for enhancing ratio of higher education among women. The government has given special attention for the improvement of school education during the last 6 years and 0.14 million school teachers had been recruited purely on merit in the province.
Rehman said that 101 new colleges had been constructed while missing facilities provided to 96 colleges during the last five years. IT labs had been set up in more than 5000 high schools and 515 middle schools during last five years, scholarships of 12 billion rupees are being provided to more than 50 thousand students within the country and abroad from Endowment fund.
