Claiming that 82 percent of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers as not regular taxpayers, federal minister for information and broadcasting Pervez Rashid on Tuesday accused PTI Chairman Imran Khan of evading tax in 1990. Addressing a press conference along state minister for privatisation Muhammad Zubair, he said 82 percent Members of National Assembly and provincial assemblies of PTI are not regular taxpayers.
He alleged that 82 percent MNAs and MPAs from PTI, including the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa chief minister, do not pay tax regularly, while Imran Khan blames others for not paying taxes. The information minister accused Khan of continuously violating the laws and vowed to reveal all the "crimes" committed by him and PTI's senior leadership.
"Imran Khan must look into his own affairs before hurling allegations against the government," Rashid added. The government has directed the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to collect tax from all the parliamentarians regardless of their party affiliation. He alleged that PTI's Secretary General Jahangir Tareen got all the loans that he had taken from banks written off. Minister of State for Privatisation Muhammad Zubair accused Tareen of multiplying his business during the government of General Pervez Musharraf (Retd).
He added that Tareen owned an ordinary business in 1990s, but after becoming member in the Musharraf government, "he is counted among the richest people of the country." "Jahangir Tareen got loans of Rs 247 million from Habib Bank Limited (HBL) written-off in 2004," he maintained.
"On one hand Imran Khan announces a civil disobedience, but on the other Tareen being Khan's right hand, his company has paid billions of rupees in connection with utility bills and taxes," Zubair said. He accused Tareen of taking advantage of his party government in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, adding that Tareen's company has received a number of contracts in different sectors, including mining. Responding to a question, Rashid said that oil prices would be further reduced by the end of this month. He said that the government is pursuing the agenda of providing relief to people and does not want to indulge in the politics of accusations.
