The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday issued notices to Kotri Industrial Area's Managing Director and chief engineer to appear before it and submit replies to the petition against discharge of contaminated industrial waste and effluent in Keenjhar Lake.
The petitioner, NGO, Human Rights Groups of Pakistan, through its trustee, Muhammad Irfan submitted that contaminated water from Kotri and Nooriabad industries and effluent were flown in Keenjhar Lake, which has put life of residents of Karachi and Thatta in danger, who are consuming unsuitable water.
Irfan said untreated industries waste is discharged into the lake for the past 10 years, making water more poisonous, adding authorities concerned had failed to take any action against industries for discharging contaminated water into the lake. He asserted that apart from causing danger to human population, the contaminated water was also affecting the biodiversity in the lake, which would directly affect the livelihood of fishermen. He added that approximately 50000 fishermen would be rendered jobless due to the loss of biodiversity.
The petitioner requested the court to direct the authorities concerned to stop the discharge of polluted water into the lake. On Tuesday, the court noted that despite issuance of notices, Kotri Industrial Area's managing director and chief engineer did not show up before it. Therefore, it issued fresh notices, directing them to appear in court on December 1.
