Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KPCCI) has demanded of the Pakistan Railways to launch special cargo train from Karachi to Peshawar for promotion of import and export along with Afghan Transit trade business. The PKCCI further demanded the business community should be taken into confidence before establishment of new dry port at Azakhel, Nowshera.
The demands were made by KPCCI President Fawad Ishaq during the visit of Pakistan Railways Headquarters Chief Traffic Manager Arshad Rahmat Ali to the chamber house here on Wednesday. During the meeting, KPCCI vice-presidents Arooj Ahmad Ansari, Iqbal Khan and others were also present.
KPCCI chief said the import and export business has been adversely affecting due to deteriorating condition of Peshawar dry-port and current financial crunch of the railways. Under the present circumstances, about 50 percent cargo consignments have been sent via Bandar Abbass Iran to neighbouring Afghanistan. The Peshawar dry port is lacking basic facilities for importers and exporters. He urged the Pakistan Railways to take immediate steps for establishment a new dry port on modern line. For this purpose, he said consultation should be made with KPCCI and other relevant stakeholders.
Chief Traffic Manager PR assured that KPCCI would be taken on board before establishment of new dry port in Peshawar. For this purpose, he informed that Federal government had already constituted a three-member committee, which would submit it report by December 15.
