Hundreds of workers of local ghee and oil mills on Tuesday organised a rally to press the authorities for restoration of gas of Ghee Mills and saving the jobs of thousands of workers. The rally began from the factory area and concluded at Multan Press. Participants were carrying placards and banners inscribed with slogans, 'stop step motherly treatment with Punjab industry', 'Restore gas supply to ghee and oil mills'.
"We have no political motive nor we have grudge with the ruling party," they said and urged the government to immediately stop discrimination in gas supply to upcountry industries, because complete suspension of gas supply had forced closure of industrial units, rendering thousands of workers unemployed.
Trade Union leaders said the closure of more than 100 ghee and oil mills in Punjab province might lead to an immediate large-scale unemployment in the region, where thousands of people were directly or indirectly attached to the ghee manufacturing trade. They said Pakistan was losing 300mmcfd of gas due to theft and leakages, which was causing Rs 20 billion loss to the gas companies in unearned revenues alone, admitted Rashid Lone, Managing Director of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines.
