CEC appointment: Supreme Court hints at issuing notices to Prime Minister, Khursheed
The Supreme Court on Tuesday hinted at issuing notices to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khurshid Shah if the vacant post of Chief Election Commissioner was not filled by December 05.
Appearing before a three-judge bench headed y Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk that resumed hearing of the matter, Attorney General for Pakistan Salman Aslam Butt told the court that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khurshid Shah were about to reach consensus over a name for appointment as permanent CEC.
Butt also expressed the hope that the issue would be resolved by December 05 to which the Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk observed that apex court had withdrawn its judge Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali - currently acting as acting CEC with effect from December 5.
During a brief hearing of the case, the Chief Justice further remarked that if the government failed to appoint a permanent head of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) by December 05 then court will issue notices in the matter to Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly. Later, hearing of the matter was adjourned till December 08.
