With a significant reduction in petroleum products prices, the Punjab Transport Department on Tuesday reduced intra-city public transport fares by seven percent i.e. Rs 2 for stop-to-stop and Rs 3-4 on long distance travel. The department issued a notification on December 1, and directed all the regional transport authorities of the province to immediately enforce orders.
However, Business Recorder observed that the operatives of Public Transport Vehicles (PSVs) are still charging the commuters in accordance with the old fares, which were fixed in 2012, saying that the transport department has not yet provided transporters with new transport fare lists.
According to new intra-city public transport fare list for non-AC local public transport (diesel/petrol) stop-to-stop fare has been reduced from Rs 15 to Rs 13 for both diesel and petrol vehicles; from 4.1 to 8 km fare has been reduced from Rs 18 to Rs 16 for petrol vehicles, while for the diesel vehicles it has been reduced from Rs 20 to Rs 18.
The government has reduced fare from 8.1km to 14km from Rs 22 to Rs 20 for (petrol) public transport vehicle, while for diesel the fare has been cut down from Rs 24 to Rs 22. From 14.1 to 22 km the fare for petrol vehicles has been cut from Rs 27 to Rs 24 and for diesel vehicles from 29 to Rs 27. Fare for 30.1 km and above has been fixed at Rs 29 for petrol vehicles against Rs 32 and fare for diesel vehicles has been fixed at Rs 32 against Rs 35. For long distance route (30.1 km and above), the government has cut down Rs 4 and Rs 3 respectively, for both petrol and diesel transport.
District Regional Transport Authority (DRTA) Secretary Owais Manzoor Tarar told Business Recorder that the notification no: SO (TR-I) 2-6/2000(5) for the reduction of public transport fares has been issued on December 1. He added that new fares list had been issued to transporters with immediate effect after the issuance of the notification from the government of Punjab Transport Department. "The Secretary Punjab Transport Department ordered implementation of the notification with immediate effect and issued the revised fare list to all the transporters. Commuters would have to pay revised fares accordingly," Tarar added.
