Google will end its Google News service in Spain this month, citing new legislation that would force the internet giant to pay for content from Spanish publications. Google announced late Wednesday it would also remove Spanish publishers from the news service.
According to Google News chief Richard Gingras, the decision was triggered by a new Spanish law set to take effect in January that compels Spanish publications to charge services like Google for showing excerpts of their content.
"As Google News makes no money (we do not show any advertising on the site) this new approach is simply not sustainable," Gingras wrote in a blog post.
Google News will close in Spain, and Spanish publishers will be removed from the service, on December 16.
