The Lahore High Court here on Thursday issued notices to federal and Punjab governments for January 15, 2015 in response to a petition seeking the execution of condemned prisoners especially those involved in terrorism cases. Earlier, chairman Judicial Activism Panel (JAP) Azhar Siddique argued before the court that the implementation of capital punishment had been stayed which was in violation of the Constitution and also repugnant to the Islamic injunctions.
He said one of the reasons behind an unannounced moratorium on the executions was the understanding of the government in the form of an agreement with the developed countries for obtaining funds/grants and other benefits. He alleged that one of the pivotal conditions of donation/funds by international monetary institutions was to keep a continuous ban on executions.
