Four more children perished due to starvation in the drought-stricken Tharparkar on Sunday. The infant children were under treatment at a hospital in Mithi. The death toll has reached 227 in last couple of months. At least 51 children are still admitted to a Civil Hospital Mithi.
The Thar Desert, straddling the Indian border and one of Pakistan's poorest areas, has seen an alarming number of children suffering pneumonia or diarrhoea due to a dangerous mix of drought, poverty and poor health infrastructure. The PPP-led Sindh government is often criticised for failing to take necessary measures to contain deaths in the desert region, despite numerous promises.
