Police on Monday claimed to have killed 13 militants associated with banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and al Qaeda in Karachi. SSP Malir Rao Anwar said an "encounter" took place near Al-Asif Square, off Super Highway, where terrorists hurled a hand-grenade at a police vehicle and opened indiscriminate fire on the police party. A heavy contingent of police was called in to repulse the attack and an exchange of fire took place between police and terrorists.
He said 13 militants were killed in the shootout that lasted for over an hour while a terrorist was arrested. He claimed that four of those killed in the fire exchange belonged to al Qaeda while the others were members of TTP. The alleged al Qaeda members were wearing police uniform, he added.
The personnel of law enforcement agencies remained unhurt in the attack. Rao Anwar said that suicide jackets, explosives and heavy automated weapons were recovered from the possession of terrorists. He said the accused were in search of any high profile target.
AFP adds: Police in Karachi said they killed 13 suspected al Qaeda and Taliban members Monday evening. "The police killed 13 suspected al Qaeda and Taliban members in an encounter at the outskirts of the city near Super Highway," senior police official Rao Muhammad Anwar told AFP. The incident was confirmed by another senior police official Qamar Zaman. He said a huge cache of explosives was also recovered.
