Provincial Agriculture Minister Dr Farrukh Javed has said the government was providing electricity to the farmers at a flat rate of Rs 10.35 per unit to facilitate them. Presiding over a joint meeting of Kisan Ithad organisations, Wapda officials and chiefs of power supply companies here on Monday, he said government was giving a subsidy of Rs 22 billion in this regard and this would continue next year as well.
The Punjab Agriculture department will play a vital role of bridging the gap between the agriculture department and the power supply companies. He directed the power distribution authorities not to create any hurdle in providing a connection of electricity to those growers who are current with their payments. The meeting was also attended by Punjab Secretary Agriculture Ali Tahir, AS Wapda Umer Rasool, Lesco Chief Executive Qaiser Zaman, Mapco CEO Muzaffar Ali, Additional Secretary Agriculture Ameer Khattak and other high ranking officers of the agriculture marketing and agriculture department.
The meeting had been convened to discuss the issues pertaining to growers with regard to power supply companies and seek solutions to these problems. Dr Farrukh Javed after listening to the issues being faced by farmers issued directives to Wapda authorities for immediate redressal. He directed the representatives of the power supply companies to submit a detailed review report about the problems highlighted by the growers.
Secretary Agriculture Punjab informed the participants of the meeting that the government policy was clear to resolve the issues of farmers pertaining to power supply on emergent basis. Wapda and Power Supply companies' chiefs addressing the meeting assured their full support to facilitate the growers at every step.
