Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Sardar Mahtab Ahmad Khan has said that early completion of Kurram Tangi Dam, a long-awaited multi-purpose project would enhance the level of economic activities, create jobs opportunities and would lead to overcome energy crises in the tribal areas.
He said the energy and water sector projects are vital for socio economic development in the entire region especially far flung and deprived regions such as FATA. He stated early and dignified repatriation of IDPs is our top priority and directed the concerned authorities to take prompt measures to make sure the transparency and completion of ongoing development projects within stipulated time for the uplift of tribal people.
He expressed these views while presiding over a high level meeting at Governor's House, Peshawar. Besides Salim Saifullah Khan, Brigadier Shahbaz Butt, Commander 493 Engr. Group, Principal secretary to governor, Dr Muhammad Fakhre Alam, Secretary P&D FATA, Sayyed Mohsan Shah, Commissioner Bannu, DG project FATA, Aziz Ahmad, political agent North Waziristan Agency, Imtiaz Hussain Shah and others attended the meeting while the Chairman WAPDA, Zafar Mehmood accompanied by his other colleagues briefed the participants about the pace of progress on the Kurram Tangi dam project.
The dam on completion will affect 0.35 million acre land of Bannu and Lakki districts besides the respective tribal belt and generate 83MW electricity. The project is expected to cost Rs 59 billion. The Chairman WAPDA also apprised the Governor about the work progress on Kurram Tangi dam in North Waziristan Agency and Munda Dam in Mohmand Agency and also discussed issues relating to WAPDA projects being executed tribal region.
Speaking on the occasion upon the benefits of the projects, the governor said the early completion of these multi purposes large and medium-sized dams in Federal Administered Tribal Areas including Kurram Tangi dam in North Waziristan agency and Munda Dam in Mohmand Agency will ensure availability of water for irrigation, generating electricity and mitigate devastating floods.
The Governor directed the officials concerned to ensure the provision of every possible facility to resolve issues related to the project and makes sure the early completion of these projects and said that no compromise would be accepted in this regard. He also directed to start the first phase of the project; tender documents should also be released on January 15, 2015. The governor directed the relevant officials to overview implementation process and address any difficulty, if arises at any stage during land acquisition process before January 31, 2014. The governor said that every possible step would be taken to ensure early completion of the Kurram Tangi Dam as importance of the project for generating economic activities in Fata as well significantly contributing for socio-economic uplift of the surrounding districts and improving economic impact at the national level.
