Ukrainian farmers increased the area sown for the 2015 grain harvest to 8.97 million hectares, 7 percent more than the previous year, the agriculture ministry said on Thursday. The area included 6.8 million hectares of winter wheat, 700,000 hectares more than a year earlier, the ministry said in a statement. It said 96 percent of sown grains had sprouted so far and 81 percent were in good or satisfactory condition.
The share of weak crops, according to the ministry data, rose to 19 percent this year compared with an average of 10 percent in the past few years. Poor crops are located mostly in eastern regions. Ukrainian weather forecasters said this month that around half of Ukraine's winter crops had been significantly delayed in their development and could be damaged by frost. Ukraine harvested around 64.3 million tonnes of grain this year, including 23 million tonnes of wheat.
