DIG Hyderabad Range Sanaullah Abbasi on Wednesday held a meeting with the regional heads of cellular companies and directed them to ensure bio-metric registration of all their customers who are using subscriber identity modules (SIMs) without bio-metric record. The regional heads of Mobilink, Telenor, Ufone, Warid and Zong attended the meeting at the DIG office to discuss the issue.
The Deputy Director of Federal Investigation Agency, Qamar Raza Jiskani, and officials of Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) also attended the meeting.
Abbasi informed that the police had registered 32 FIRs against the suspects involved in the use and sale of illegal SIMs including nine in Jamshoro, eight in Badin, five in Matiari and Tando Allahyar, two in Hyderabad and Dadu, and one in Tando Muhammad Khan districts.
The police had also recovered 959 SIMs from the possession of the suspects, he added.
He further said that for the national interest all the companies ought to extend their cooperation with police in order to implement Electronic Transaction Ordinance 2002, their cooperation will highly be appreciated in this regard.
All cases would be referred to the FIA for investigation under the Electronic Transaction Ordinance 2002, which brings higher penalty and punishment against the offenders.
He informed that the FIA would train the police regarding investigation under the ordinance.
The Deputy Director also held a meeting with the Investigation Officers (IOs) to scrutinize the registered cases, he added.
