The Lahore High Court here on Thursday issued the arrest warrants for secretary Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for not submitting his reply in response to a petition seeking fresh scrutiny of all parliamentarians. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) worker Javed Badar said the ECP in a report submitted before the Supreme Court admitted that the returning officers had not carried out scrutiny of the candidates of 2013 general election in terms of Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution.
He said the commission had taken a plea that the scrutiny of candidates could not be held due to non-co-operation of government institutions. He stated that many ineligible candidates were elected to the assemblies due to inefficiencies of the ECP. Therefore, he said, the commission should be ordered to hold scrutiny of the parliamentarians afresh to assess their qualification under Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution.
The court had sought a reply from the ECP secretary, however, four notices issued by it remained unanswered. The secretary neither appeared before the court nor did he file his reply. Taking exception to the non compliance of its order, the court issued arrest warrants for the secretary for February 10 next.
