Sindh University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Abida Taherani has said that a Department of Liberal Arts & Science would be established at the varsity soon. She said this while speaking to Vice-Chancellor of Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur, Professor Dr Parveen Shah, here on Friday. Former SU VC Professor Dr Nazir A Mughal was also present in the meeting.
Taherani said that boosting research was fundamental to improving teaching and learning. Building research culture and promoting innovation would foster a vibrant learning community, she observed. Excellence in research was what distinguished great institutions from the rest, she said adding that "it is what puts our students at the cutting edge of knowledge, so they have an access to latest discoveries".
She said that the SU faculty members were efficient and promoting research, development, and innovation would further cement the varsity's position as the country's leading institution. The VC pledged to work for enhanced resources for students including more financial assistance, campus housing, improved physical and mental health facilities, venues for sports, and outlets for culture.
She said the new department would pave the way for promotion of peace, harmony and equality in society. "The department will be opened soon and every student from the next academic session will be bound to take a course of at least one credit hour", she said. Dr Taherani said that the initiative was being taken to discourage extremist mindset and put the youth on the track towards tolerance.
The VC said she would make efforts towards forging research and learning alliances with universities in the country and abroad. She urged the university community to build on the contributions of the leaders that helped in making SU one of the top public universities in the country.
Meanwhile, Pro-Vice Chancellors of SU campuses Professor Dr Anwar Ali Shah; Professor Dr Imdad Ali Ismail; Muhammad Nawaz Narejo; Professor Dr Aslam Parvaiz Memon; Professor Dr Hakim Ali Kanasero and Deans of various faculties Professor Dr Parvaiz Ahmed Pathan; Professor Dr Javed Iqbal; Professor Dr Anwar Khan Pathan; Professor Dr Parveen Munshi; Professor Dr Abdullah Dayo and Registrar of the varsity Ghulam Muhammad Bhutto called on the Vice-Chancellor and discussed with her academic matters of their campuses and faculties.
