A delegation from Australia visited the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore and called on Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Talat Naseer Pasha at the city campus Lahore here on Wednesday. The delegation comprised Peter Horn and David Swete Kelly, both are associated with Australian Centre for International Agriculture Research ACIAR.
According to the spokesperson of the UVAS the VC briefed the delegation on the academic, research, extension, training and Vision 2025 Programme of UVAS. He said the UVAS is working closely with Livestock and Dairy Development department for serving the farming and business communities for provision of healthy food to the people. He discussed disease management, vaccine production and treatment of animals, market issues, how to enhance production of meat and dairy animals, agriculture value chain and economic development in Pakistan with the delegation.
He suggested exchange faculty members and students of the UVAS and Australian universities. Professor Pasha said that under the Australian government-funded ASLP Project, the UVAS is working with 1,500 registered farmers in five districts of Punjab and two districts in Sindh. He said that enhanced livestock growth and productivity are essential to meet the challenging food demand for our increasing population and to alleviate poverty.
The delegation appreciated the role of UVAS in not only producing competent manpower and promoting veterinary science but also contributing to development of livestock, poultry, dairy and other allied sectors. Dr Hassan Mahmood Warraich resource person mission of Agriculture Sector Linkage Programme (ASLP-Phase three) was also present on the occasion.
