The Supreme Court on Friday issued notices to former Federal Minister for Railways Ghulam Ahmad Bilour and Prosecutor General of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) over alleged embezzlement of Rs 48 million in the supply of iron to Pakistan Railways (PR) during the previous regime.
A three-member bench led by Justice Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan and Justice Ijaz Ahmed Chaudhry issued directives while hearing a bail application moved by Jawad Ahmad, who is in jail for a year after NAB declared his involvement in the Rs 48 million scam. According to the findings of the NAB investigator, Jawad Ahmad supplied iron to PR after he purchased it from Pakistan Steel Mills - a deal which caused a loss of Rs 48 million to the national kitty.
Jawad Ahmad's counsel sought bail for his client; however, the bench directed that the entire amount of Rs 48 million was required to be credited to the treasury before grant of bail. Jawad Ahmad's counsel contended that NAB did not investigate the involvement of the then Federal Railways Minister Ghulam Ahmad Bilour or other concerned officials of PR; however, he added that his client was ready to pay the embezzled amount in instalments. The bench issued notices to Ghulam Ahmad Bilour and Prosecutor General of NAB in the matter and adjourned the hearing of case till February 16.
