Dr S Mati-ur-Rehman, a renowned scholar, who earned a PhD in Psychology from Duke University, NC-USA, as a Fulbright Scholar, was a psychologist by profession and a well known educationist. He passed away in Karachi on 3rd February, 2015 and was buried the same evening. His funeral was largely attended. Dr Rehman has left behind his wife, two daughters and a son.
He was the eldest son of Professor Syed Shah Ata-ur-Rehman, a well known Urdu poet in India who was awarded the most coveted and prestigious award of "Padm-e-Bhooshan" during his life time. Dr Rehman was born in Patna (India) in 1929.
Prior to the fall of East Pakistan in 1971, he was Professor of Psychology at the Rajshahi University. After the fall, he shifted here and joined Government College Lahore since he had a great passion for teaching. Thereafter, he joined GHQ Rawalpindi as Head of Psycho Warfare Division in the Military Intelligence. Lately he spent his time teaching Management at couple of universities in Islamabad. Dr Rehman was for many years, Secretary General of "Friends" a think tank, which was headed by General Aslam Baig. Dr Rehman has written many articles which were published in National News Papers and Defence Journals.
Urdu poetry was the trait of his family; so like his father and brother Marhoom Arshad Kakwi, who was a contemporary of Andaleep Shadani in East Pakistan, he too was a good poet and used to participate in Mushairas many a times. The humane side of his life had won him many friends and admirers. He loved travelling too considering it to be the best source of seeking education and experience. May Allah rest his soul in eternal peace, Ameen-Summa-Ameen.-PR
