Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS) Vice-Chancellor Professor Noshad A Shaikh on Thursday inaugurated 'Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Clinic' at the Out Patient Department of Liaquat University Hospital (LUH), Hyderabad. The clinic has been established under 'Pakistan-Australia Protection of Avoidable Blindness Project', funded by Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Government of Australia.
Speaking on the occasion, Professor Noshad said that diabetic retinopathy was a common complication of diabetes and it might not have any symptoms or might not affect sight in the early stages, but as the condition progressed eventually the sight would be affected. When the condition was caught early, treatment was effective at reducing or preventing damage to sight, he added.
He said that the newly established clinic would help screen the patients with Diabetic Retinopathy in the early stage of the disease. The Vice-Chancellor appreciated the efforts and support by NGOs for the prevention of blindness in Pakistan.
