The opposition in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Friday took exception to allegations of trade in the Senate elections by PTI and Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) chiefs and asked them for refraining from making such allegations against the elected public representatives of the province.
The matter was first taken by PPP woman legislator Nighat Yasmin Orakzai on a point of order. She said that they respect all political leaders, but she said PTI chief Imran Khan has talked about a price of Rs 20 million for one MPA while JI chief Siraj-ul-Haq has attributed it to the horse-trading.
She said that both leaders were well aware that Senators were elected through secret ballot. She said any candidate that find proposer and seconder could filed nominations. He said that through these allegations, these political leaders have questioned the integrity of all legislators. She said that it was the duty of the legislator to vote for candidates who are in the interest of the province. Speaker Asad Qaiser who was presiding over the proceedings pledged that they prove their credibility through their characters.
The PML-N parliamentary leader, Sardar Aurangzeb Nalotah, also criticised the blame-game of horse-trading in the Senate elections by top political leaders and asked to unveil the names of those involved in the immoral practice.
In response to the outburst of the opposition legislators JI chief Siraj-ul-Haq expressed gratitude that members of the house have become aware that some people were chasing legislators to elect themselves to the upper house of parliament on the basis of their capital. However, he said the legislators have replied them in unequivocal terms.
He said that all top political leaders were fed up the present political system in the country, saying that during his meeting with Imran Khan, Nawaz Sharif, Shahbaz Sharif and Maulana Fazlur Rehman all were having consensus on need for review of the electoral system through which no common man could reach parliament. Therefore, proportional representation is best choice for electing competent people to parliament.
He said that as compare to other provinces, politics in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was totally different where common man could also reach to the assembly and its ample proof is the sitting provincial assembly.
Siraj-ul-Haq said that since 2002 they were electing Senators, but most of them never utter a single word in the interest of the people of the province and some of them even go abroad to look after their businesses. He said that the purchase of conscience of legislators was their misconception and every member of the KP Assembly was standing like a rock. He said that he was nominated for the Senate seat by his party and for this purpose solely depending on the members of this house.
Earlier, the leader of the opposition, Maulana Lutf-ur-Rehman, bitterly criticised the provincial KP government for not taking foolproof security measures in the backdrop of the Army Public School (APS) tragedy that was followed by terrorists' attack on Imambargah in Hayatabad.
He said the provincial government through the passage of the Security of Sensitive Installation Act has put the responsibility of the security directly on the people. He said though it was very crucial issue, but the provincial KP government like the Frontier Crime Regulations (FCR) of tribal area is putting it on the collective responsibility of the people. He said under the law the management of private schools were themselves responsible for their security.
He said that terrorist incidents were continued in the country, but senior officials of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government were not taking any concrete step for their prevention and searching solution through the apex committees. He said the provincial government was doing nothing to protect the lives of the citizens.
