Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) provincial leaders have on Wednesday strongly rejected imposition of Gas Infrastructure Development Cess, which the PML-N government is intending to impose on the poor domestic gas consumers. PTI Punjab president Ejaz Chaudhry said it has been clear now that the PML-N government always comes up with pro rich and anti tax policy.
He questioned that why the government does not target big guns rather than burdening common citizens with indirect taxes. He said the government has increased GST on petroleum products by 10 percent in less than two months with no accountability from the assembly. PTI Punjab secretary general Yasmin Rashid said parliamentary panel has approved the amended Gas Infrastructure Development Cess bill to give legal cover to the collection of Rs 95 billion, which will increase the burden on gas consumers. "Poor consumers are being made to pay indirect taxes through their nose and parliamentarians are backing their own made laws for self-enrichment without bounds," she added. PTI Punjab information secretary Andleeb Abbas termed the imposition of Gas Infrastructure Development Cess as unjustified and added that the purpose of the Cess is to finance the gas pipeline projects, which are still on paper and God knows when these projects will be made functional.
