Peer Masood Chishti has been elected president of the Lahore High Court Bar Association for year 2015-16 by defeating his rival candidate, Sheikh Shahid Maqbool. Chishti, who was enjoying the support of the Asma Jahangir group, bagged 4,053 votes while his rival candidate Sheikh Shahid led by the Hamid Khan group could get 3,118 votes according to the unofficial results announced here on Saturday.
Unlike the previous year, the Asma Jahangir group marked the victory and won all four seats with a big margin. On the slot of Vice-President, Irfan Arif Sheikh was elected with 4,309 votes while his rival candidate Soofia Masood could bag 2805 votes. Muhammad Ahmad Qayyum won the seat of Secretary and bagged 3,751 votes while his rival candidate Mian Asghar Ali of the Hamid Khan group could secure 3,392 votes.
Syed Akhtar Sheerazi got 2,628 votes and elected finance secretary against his three rival candidates - Amina Ajmal, Azeem Akram and Nabeela Jafri. Ms Amna could get 1395 votes, Nabeela Jafri bagged total 1452 votes while Azeem got 1682 votes. Addressing his supporters, Peer Masood Chishti said that he would work for the welfare of the lawyer community and would continue struggle for the supremacy of law and justice. Out of 19,672 registered votes only 7,300 votes were cast. 5,800 votes were cast through biometric system while 1,500 votes were cast through manual system.
It is first time in the country's history that lawyers used biometric system for their election. Election Board Deputy Chairman Tahir Munir Malik said that election through the biometric system was a good experience which could be adopted across the country to held transparent elections for larger national interest.
