Rs 200 million being spent to strengthen 17 rehab centres in Sindh: chief minister
Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah has said that Rs 200 million are being spent only to strengthen seventeen rehabilitation centres in the province under Social Welfare department where according to him about 550 disable children are being rehabilitated. He said that PPP government recently has upgraded Dar-ul-Aman Centre each at Karachi, Hyderabad and Sukkur not only to provide congenial environment but to provide justice to the deprived women.
He stated this while holding meeting about the performance of Social Welfare department at CM House here on Monday. The CM formed a three-member committee comprising Secretary to CM Alummuddin Bullo, Secretary Social Welfare Sharikh Ahemd and Secretary Services Mukhtiar Ahmed Soomro to work out and strengthen the department within shortest possible time.
The CM asked the officers to encourage social welfare organisations, which are delivering the needy people without any discrimination. He was of the view that by rehabilitation and skill development, we can convert the disable children into main stream of manpower. He said that Sindh government has already reserved the government job quota of two percent and stressed upon the private sector to provide jobs to special and disable youths in their organisations. He said that Social Welfare department must be strong enough so that people, social workers NGOs, government organisations can be mobilised effectively for participatory development and welfare activities.
The Advisor to CM for Social Welfare Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar while briefing the meeting said that more than 10,000 NGOs have been registered with Social Welfare department. He said that out of these more than 6000 are registered on district level and about 4000 registered at provincial level. Responding to question Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar informed that more than 30 special children are enrolled in each rehabilitation centre. Secretary to CM Alumuddin Bullo, Secretary Social Welfare Sharik Ahmed, Secretary to Services Mukhtiar Ahmed Soomro, Secretary Law Mir Muhammad Shaikh and other officers also attended the meeting.
