The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has issued a notice to the Attorney General seeking explanation against the election of the chairman and deputy chairman of the Senate. The IHC on Tuesday heard a petition filed by Central Information Secretary of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Dr Shireen Mazari in the court.
During the hearing, Ms Mazari's attorney took the stance that the top Senate posts cannot be filled in as long as all the units of the Federation are not completed. He was of the view that at present there is no representation of FATA and the Federation in the Upper House, and that the chairman and deputy chairman can only be elected after fulfilling the requirements of Article 59 and 60 of the Constitution. Justice Athar Minallah said that there were members in the Senate from Fata. "If a senator dies or a few senators retire from various provinces, then neither the Senate proceedings can be halted, nor can it be regarded as illegal?" he remarked.
