The political Jirga entrusted with the gigantic task to settle the issue of proposed judicial commission for holding probe into the alleged rigging in 2013 general elections, on Friday sent its final draft of terms of reference (ToRs) of the proposed commission to both the government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
The political Jirgah, headed by Ameer Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Senator Sirajul Haq and former Interior Minister Rehman Malik, has been making efforts to find an acceptable solution to PTI and PML-N, as both the parties are pole apart on the terms of references (ToRs) for the proposed judicial commission.
The Jirgah, which was busy in marathon meetings with the two sides for the last several months, had said it will define the scope of the commission in light of the draft prepared by both the sides and the ToRs for the judicial commission will be finalised. The proposed draft has now been dispatched to the stakeholders after a meeting of the political Jirgah at the residence of Rehman Malik.
The meeting was also attended by JI chief Sirajul Haq, Hasil Bizenjo of National Party, G. G. Jamal from FATA and others. It also discussed the letters written to the political Jirgah by both PPP and PTI to incorporate some of their proposals into the final draft.
The final draft of the committee will now be endorsed by the two parties - PTI and PML-N - and if approved a judicial commission will be formed for holding probe into rigging allegations levelled by PTI against the ruling PML-N in election 2013. After the meeting Sirajul Haq told reporters that the teething democracy of the country is facing serious threats which might be harmful for the political parties if timely measures to flourish were not taken by the people at helm of affairs.
He said that democracy has suffered from inertia, while its proponents were making hue and cry without any focus and purpose. Siraj said that the Jirgah wanted the issue of judicial commission to be settled as soon as possible so that a thorough probe into rigging allegations could be done.
Malik said that both PTI and PML-N fully co-operated with the political Jirgah, adding whether the parties accept the mandate of the Jirgah or not but both the sides have appreciated its role which is a good omen for democracy. Malik said that a comprehensive draft has been prepared and the proposals of both PTI and PML-N have also been incorporated which has given birth to hopes it will pave the way for formation of a judicial commission. He said that the political Jirgah is optimistic the lingering issue of the judicial commission will be solved within a day or two as both sides have fully co-operated with the Jirgah in preparing the final draft which has now been sent to them for approval.
