Speakers at the meeting of Shura Hamdard Karachi chapter urged the government to promote education of science and technology as without the help of science and technology the country would not be able to explore and utilise its tremendous natural resources.
The meeting was held on Thursday March 12, on the theme: "Natural Resources-rich country and rapid advancement towards progress and development," presided over by former justice Haziqul Khairi at a local hall.
Speaking on the occasion, former Justice Haziqul Kairi said, the biggest human resource in the world was human brain and by using that Japanese had made tremendous progress though they did not have any mentionable natural resources even then they achieved the status of most-developed nation in the world. "They have a monopoly on manufacturing and selling of motor cars in the world to such an extent that American roads are now filled with Japanese cars and as a result of this development the American car manufacturing industry has gone down," he added.
Sadia Rashid, President, Hamdard Foundation Pakistan said that according to a saying of Hakim Said "Pakistan was bestowed upon with all those bounties and natural resources, mentioned in Holy Quran by Allah Almighty. But utilisation of all those bounties and natural resources could not be turned to account effectively without applying knowledge of science and technology. So it was imperative that education of science and technical education should be encouraged and introduced from primary classes and onwards," she asserted.
Mahdi Masud, former ambassador of Pakistan said that human character was more important than brain, because without good character human brain could not be positively used. National character plus chain of command were responsible for national growth and prosperity, he added.
Professor Mohammed Rafi was of the view that "ours was an Islamic society even then telling a lie, corruption, deception, dishonesty and extremism were on high pedestal in the society though Islam strictly had prohibited all these things, because of our negligence that we didn't follow true Islam. Wrong use of natural resources was also a negation of God's bounties," he maintained.
Commodore Sadeed Anwar Malik (Retd) while highlighting the natural resources of Pakistan said, "We didn't have the skills to develop raw material so that our crude marble was being sold on 20-fold prices after polishing it in Italy and that's what was being happened to our other minerals and natural products. Our biggest natural resource was our strategic position, but we didn't take full advantage out of this yet," he contended.
Dr Shahid Hassan Siddiqui, an economist said, "God has given us natural resources with great generosity. But no governments had ever made long-term plans to explore and utilise them, because of lack of political will." International monetary institutions had also discouraged us in this regard, he observed.
Haq Nawaz Akhtar, former Chairman, Pakistan Steel Mills said that a good natural resource of Kalabagh dam was lost, resulting in heavy loss of waters coming down from floods and rains. "This water also spoiled our fertile lands by increasing salinity and getting ground water's level up, he added. In spite of making motorways it was more useful to draw a railways' network around the country," he suggested. Shamim Kazmi, M Abul Fazal and Anwar Aziz Jakartawalla also spoke.-PR
