The Sindh High Court on Friday fixed the sugarcane price at Rs 172 per 40kg after the provincial government agreed to pay Rs 12 subsidy. A division bench, headed by Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi, was hearing a petition filed by the Sindh Chamber of Agriculture's (SCA) office-bearers, who moved the court against the provincial authorities and the millers for not paying the sugarcane growers the price set by the government.
At the outset of hearing, the Secretary Irrigation informed the court that the government was ready to pay Rs 12 per 40kg subsidy to fix the price at Rs 172 per 40kg, as the sugar millers were also willing to pay Rs 160 per 40kg. The secretary said that the government would pay Rs 12 subsidy through the sugar mills. While disposing of the petition, the bench directed the authorities to ensure that the growers were paid sugarcane price at Rs 172.
