High Commissioner of India in Pakistan, Dr T.C.A. Raghavan, has stressed the need for focusing on improving trade infrastructure and removing tariff and non-tariff barriers for promoting bilateral trade ties between Pakistan and India.
Speaking at meeting of Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) and later talking to newsmen on Friday, he said India and Pakistan's economic relationship have improved because of more interaction at different levels since 2012 and both the countries have come close to treat each other as normal trade partner. "We need to facilitate and create an enabling environment by ensuring a peaceful neighbourhood which is a must to overcome the challenges being faced by both the countries," he added.
Commenting on Indian visa policy, Raghavan said that Pakistani people who have medical urgency would be issued visas within 24 hours. He said that Indian High Commission was trying its best to issue visas expeditiously to Pakistani businessmen.
He agreed that visa cases of bona fide businesspeople be treated separately and the visas be issued to them on priority to ensure more interaction between the business communities of both the countries. To a question about reopening of Indian consulate in Karachi, he said that the consulate had been lying closed since long and there is no plan under consideration to reopen it in the near future.
He said that the Indian High Commission has established visa form collecting centres at Hyderabad, Sukkur and other cities. He said that environment in India was changing rapidly and now Indians watch PTV's drama serials and other TV programmes, besides Pakistani actors have been playing leading roles in Indian films.
