The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has established display centres in all 43 Cantonment areas for one week to fulfil the prerequisites for holding local government (LG) elections. According to the ECP, the schedule of LG elections will be announced in coming week while polling day is April 25.
Lists at display centres have 87,000 additions of people who have got new CNICs since March 2013 and 14,000 deletions of people who died etc. The people of Cantonment board areas can also check their vote details by sending CNIC No: at 8300. The commission also sent a summary to the President of Pakistan to seek his consent regarding holding LG elections in Cantonment board areas. In summary, it has been asked whether the elections in Cantonment areas should be on party or non-party basis.
The LG elections will have to be held on non-party basis as the Cantonment Act, 1924 section 15-BB, introduced in 1979, prevents nominees of political parties from contesting these elections. On the other hand, the Supreme Court wanted elections to be held in cantonment areas but the government did not make amendment to the Cantonment Act which clearly states that elections will be held on non-party basis.
