Trade and business activities in the city have slowed down due to fear of a strong reaction to the intensified operation against criminals. "Sales have been hit soon after the arrest of key target killers during the ongoing operation," traders said on Thursday. However, they appreciated the action of Rangers against extortionists and target killers to stem violence in a city that has suffered decades of unrest.
They expressed the fear that any political reconciliation and compromise would have a strong drawback to the country's peace and fragile economy. "Political compromise should not affect the Rangers initiative to take on the outlaws indiscriminately," Chairman, All Karachi Tajir Ittehad, Atiq Mir, said.
He further said that the arrest of target killers had hit businesses activities in the city due to fear of reaction. He hoped that the situation would soon turn conducive in the coming weeks.
He also feared that political reconciliation might again stop Rangers from carrying out the much needed operation to clean up the city from extortionists, target killers, drugs peddlers and other anti-social elements. "If the operation is aborted then one could not imagine the destruction of the city and its economy," he warned.
He said that the operation had a significant impact on the city's peace and its trade. "People are now clam at large and would like to see more improvement," he added.
He asked the federal government to hand over civic administration to Rangers with a view to building the city on modern lines.
