State Minister Engineer Baligh-ur-Rehman has sought support of private sector in increasing literacy rate and promoting vocational education in the country. He was speaking at ameeting with members of Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry at Federation House here on Thursday. He said that PML-N led government was focusing on skill development and R&D which can be better done with strong bond between and academia and industries.
"It would give significant boost to industrial growth without depending much on foreign expertise," he said. He informed that enrolment of students had been increased to 78 percent from 68 percent of total children during last two years of PML-N government. "We have to improve our education system in order to increase enrolment of students," he added.
He emphasised the need of promoting vocational education and training especially for those students who lack resources or are not interested to get higher education. He said present government has revamped Vocational Act 1962 which makes mandatory for an industry to provide apprenticeship training to at least 20 percent of its workforce.
"The draft is with cabinet for discussion which will be later presented in the national assembly for approval," he apprised.
He further said that the government was striving hard to overcome the power crisis.
President FPCCI Mian Muhammad Adrees appreciated the government's efforts on the social and economic fronts. He urged the government to revisit all those Acts under different ministries dealing with trade and industry and create level playing field for the business sector.
CEO TDAP SM Muneer reiterated the old demand of business community to cut weekly off to one instead of two. He also urged the government to introduce business-friendly policies for promoting trade and industry in the country.
