Using HDMI connectors is the easiest way to pull all the components of your home cinema unit together. But, just because you've got an older receiver without any HDMI ports, that doesn't mean you've got to run out and buy a new unit.
In many cases, the various parts of a home cinema system - think Blu-ray player or agaming console - can be connected to the receiver with cinch cables.
If that doesn't work, connect all the devices to the TV instead, using its HDMI sockets, and then send the audio signal from the TV to the receiver using an optical cable, assuming that's an option.
This will yield the great home-cinema sound you yearn for.
Usually, changing the audio output settings in the TV settings menu is all it takes to divert the signals.
