The China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) is the owner of the Three Gorges Dam and power generating facilities built on the Yangtze River in China having power generation capacity of 22,500MW and this is the largest hydropower scheme in the world. Total installed capacity by CTG at the end of 2014 was 50,210 MW which will increase to 70,000 MW by 2022.
The Three Gorges Dam enhances the navigability of the Yangtze River. The reservoir can store, about 32 MAF of water and has an important role in flood protection. The capacity is more than twice the combined Mangla and Tarbela reservoirs which have a storage capacity of about 16 MAF.
The 22,500 MW installed capacity produced in excess of 98 billion kWh, in 2014, at a plant factor of approx. 46%. This is almost equal to the entire electricity capacity and generation of Pakistan.
CTG is committed to development of Pakistan's hydropower resources to produce environmentally friendly hydropower at an affordable cost. We have leveraged our experience as owner of the giant Three Gorges Dam to start development of large hydropower projects in Pakistan.
CTG has taken an outstanding initiative to develop, the mega hydropower projects in Pakistan. The first of the projects are Kohala (1100MW), Karot (720MW) and Mahl (590MW). Other projects will follow and the Company is a serious player in the hydropower sector CTG SAIL (China Three Gorges South Asia Investment Corporation Limited) has been formed as the holding company for the Pakistan investments.
The 720MW Karot HPP is close to financial closing and is expected to start construction this year after the land acquisition process has been completed and the required land for the project has been acquired.
The CTG has rich experience and financial resources to act as a strong catalyst for hydropower development in Pakistan and has the capability to undertake mega hydropower projects in the next decade subject to successful implementation of the current projects under development.
