A purported audio tape of telephonic conversations between Pakistan Tekreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan and another senior party leader Dr Arif Alvi Friday (yesterday) went viral in which the duo apparently appreciated the attack on Pakistan Television (PTV) headquarters last year.
During conversation, Alvi purportedly informed the PTI chief about the attack on the PTV and suspension of the broadcast that happened last year when protesters stormed the state-run PTV headquarters. In the conversation Imran Khan can be heard saying "that's good...they just deserved it" when Arif Alvi informed him about the attack.
The telephonic conversation was confirmed by Dr Alvi as genuine but stated that different words and sentences have been spliced together. "My voice and IK's [Imran Khan] voice seems genuine. Different words and conversations have been spliced together. I am a staunch supporter of privacy. I never record calls," Alvi twitted on a social networking website while reacting to the leaked audio tape.
In the conversation, Imran Khan can also be heard asking Alvi to keep the pressure on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to tender resignation "otherwise he will not tender resignation...as they are going tomorrow for a joint session [of the parliament]... he should resign before the joint session".
Alvi can also be heard updating Imran Khan about his contact with Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the latter responding to continue trying to reaching out to the party. "You've to put maximum pressure [on government] for a result tomorrow," Imran asked Alvi, in a leaked telephonic conversation.
"There is nothing wrong in what has been presented vis-a-vis MQM. At the time of Dharna, we openly requested all parties including MQM to join us," Alvi stated in another tweet to clarify his conversation with Imran about the MQM.
