Why doesn't finance minister Ishaq Dar admit the fact that the Ministry of Planning, Development and Reform has revised downward the GDP growth rate of 2014-15 to 4.5 percent against the original target of 5.1 percent due to impediments in agriculture and industrial sectors besides energy shortfalls and law and order?
Why doesn't his ministry respond to former federal finance minister Dr Hafiz Pasha's forecast which is even lower than what a government ministry has projected for the ongoing fiscal year? Why is he still insisting that the 5.1 GDP target set by the government for this fiscal is quite achievable? He is required to come clean with people on the GDP numbers. He is also required to appreciate the fact that right economic policymaking cannot take place in the absence of accurate data. Insofar as Planning ministry's projection is concerned, one needs to generously concede the fact that structural impediments to economic growth remain unaddressed.
