The Punjab police arrested son of a former minister and a feudal Ghulam Mustafa Kanju on the charge of gunning down a 15-year-old boy Zain Rauf near the Cavalry Ground after opening indiscriminate fire on a crowd.
The police said the arrest came hours after the incident took place near Cavalry Ground in Lahore Cantt, where Mustafa Kanju and his guards also wounded a passer-by when he and his three guards opened fire following a road accident between his vehicle and a motorcycle. According to the details, Mustafa was allegedly drunk. The slain youth, the only son of a widowed mother and brother of two sisters was a student of class ninth while the injured was recognised as Zain's friend Hasnain.
Mustafa Kanju, the son of former state minister for foreign affairs Siddique Kanju, escaped the scene and was on the run before police arrested him from his native town of Kohra Pakka in south Punjab after carrying out several raids.
Earlier, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had taken strict notice of murder of Zain and sought a report from DIG Operations. The Chief Minister ordered immediate arrest of the accused and directed that action should be taken against them as per law. Justice should be provided to the family of the deceased student at any cost, he emphasised. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister, taking immediate notice on the appeal of mother of deceased Zain, has directed police officials to immediately arrest those threatening the family of late Zain and all possible protection should be provided to the affected family.
Members of Zain's family had alleged that they had received phone calls from the family of the accused threatening them and asking them to back down from the charges. They also appealed to the Punjab government to provide the family protection.
The police said Kanju was under custody and would soon be interrogated. The weapon used in the killing was yet to be recovered-a key piece of evidence for a murder case.
