The personnel of law-enforcement agencies on Friday caught a key accused, Abdul Rehman aka Bhola, involved in the Baldia Town garment factory fire case who was trying to flee the country. Bhola, son of Abdul Sattar, was arrested from Karachi airport when he was about to board a flight PK-607. Immigration officials checked his record and apprehended him at around 3pm on Friday.
Airport officials informed the Rangers and handed over the accused to the paramilitary force. Law enforcers were going after the key culprit, Abdul Rehman, involved in the Baldia Town garment factory fire case, in which more than 250 labourers were burnt alive.
The factory was reportedly set on fire when its owners refused to pay extortion money to a political party of Karachi. According to the Rangers report, citing confession of suspected target killer Rizwan Qureshi, the factory fire was an organized crime. A top leader of a Karachi-based political party had sought Rs 200 million from the owner of the garment factory in Baldia Town. When the owners approached the political leader, he feigned ignorance.
The report said altercations between factory owners and a leader of the Karachi-based political party also erupted. The political bigwig was subsequently also relieved of his responsibilities in the party, added the report.
It is said in a report that chemical was spilled in the Baldia Town garment factory with a purpose to set it on fire - in reaction against the non-payment of extortion money to the said political party.
The main accused, who is under custody of the Pakistan Rangers, made big revelations. He alleged that a 'front man' obtained Rs 150 million from factory owners to 'wind up' the case.
The fire in Ali Enterprises - a garment factory in Baldia Town - burnt at least 258 people alive on September 11, 2012.
