Special Assistant to KP Chief Minister for Social Welfare Dr Mehr Taj Roghani has disclosed that the provincial government has planned to establish a Centre of Excellence for the welfare of the mentally disabled children to provide them better opportunities of education and vocational training to enable them to achieve dignified status in the society.
She stated this while addressing a seminar on "Awareness, early detection and treatment of Autism" at Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University for Women (SBBUW) at Larama, Peshawar. The seminar was jointly arranged by SBBUW and Pakistan Scientific and Technological Centre for Information (PASTIC). Students, teachers, psychologists and social workers attended the seminar. Those who spoke on the occasion were Dr Razia Sultan, SBBUW VC, Dr Kaneez Fatima, Principal Home Economics College, Nageen, Director PASTIC, Dr Irfan from Peshawar Medical College and many others.
While speaking on the occasion, Dr Mehr Taj Roghani stressed upon the need to spread awareness about mentally disabled children and added that development of such children is collective responsibility of the society. She informed the participants of the seminar that mentally disabled children, which are a neglected portion of the society ie 12 to 15 percent of the population of the province.
Referring to the strategy of the government for the welfare of the mentally retarded children, she said that a centre under the title of "TABDELI" would be established in Peshawar to provide excellent skill and educational facility to such children.
"This centre will provide vocational training, business development, education, legal assistance and social inclusive services to the mentally disabled children," she said. Earlier, experts highlighted in detail signs and symptoms of Autism. The experts pinpointed that early diagnose and proper treatment could minimise negative effects of the disease. Shields on this occasion were given away to Dr Razia Sultana, Dr Kaneez Fatima, Dr Irfan, Dr Saqib, Ghazala, Nageen and Farhat for their services for the welfare of the mentally disabled children.
