36 years ago, today, the first Pakistani elected Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was hanged. At the time of execution, he also was the Chairman of the Islamic Conference. Leaders all over the world were shocked when they learned about the execution of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, the man who had struggled to change the destiny of the Pakistani people.
Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was deposed as elected prime minister through a martial law and then hanged without any justification. During his trial five judges were against the capital punishment and opposed it, so the military dictator decided to retire four of them. Later four judges announced the death sentence and three judges opposed it. This was a split judgement and had no precedent in world history.
After Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, his daughter Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto took over as party head and took forward the mission of her father, up until her own martyrdom. Today, his grandson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is the Chairperson of Pakistan People's Party and taking the mission of his grandfather forward with great courage.
Shaheed Mohtarma was murdered in the same city where Bhutto was hanged. Today people all around the world are thinking about the cruel treatment meted out to Bhuttos by dictators. Time has proved that the conspirators could not erase his name from history. Forced sentences, executions did not stop the revolution of Bhutto.
