Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) leader Zafar Ali Shah on Monday moved Islamabad High Court (IHC) with the plea to direct the federal government to accept resignations of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf members of National Assembly.
The former senator of the ruling party filed a petition in the IHC, making Federation through Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif, Speaker National Assembly, Leader of the Opposition, Election Commission of Pakistan, and PTI members of National Assembly, as respondents.
Shah submitted that under the constitutional provisions, if a member of the National Assembly tendered resignation his membership is considered as cancelled with immediate effect.
He further said that PTI members were not eligible to attend the joint session of the Parliament, terming them as 'strangers in the House' as they have tendered resignation seven and half months ago.
However, he said that it was the responsibility of the Speaker of the National Assembly to verify whether the resignations were tendered voluntarily or under coercion. The petitioner furnished newspaper clippings as evidence with the plea through which the PTI MNAs stated that they collectively visited the Speaker National Assembly Chamber for confirmation of their resignations.
