Pakistan Navy Ship Aslat arrived at the Karachi Port on Tuesday after successful evacuation of 146 Pakistanis including men, women and children and 36 foreign nationals stranded in Al Mukallah in Yemen. The foreign nationals included eight Chinese, eight Filipinos, four British, three Indonesians, two Syrians, one Canadian, one Egyptian, one Jordanian and 11 Indians. All were safely taken on board the Pakistan Navy Ship Aslat, said a PN press release issued here on Tuesday.
The Pakistan Navy (PN) considering it a national obligation immediately acted and sailed its ships for evacuation of Pakistanis stranded in Yemen. The Pakistan Navy ship reached Al Mukallah on April 2, 2015, which had third largest cluster of Pakistanis in Yemen. However, to ensure safety, the Yemeni authorities imposed restriction on movement of personnel from assembly point to the port city for embarkation on board the ship due to deteriorated security situation in the city.
Upon assessing the ongoing environment in Al Mukkallah vis a vis safety of Pakistani nationals, the evacuation effort was switched to nearby the Ash Shihr Port. The ship had comprehensive arrangements to ensure safe and comfortable return of all evacuees.
Besides safeguarding maritime interests of Pakistan, the PN had always been at the forefront with the international community to conduct humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations overseas. The resolve and commitment was also evident at numerous occasions in the past, including assistance rendered to the Maldives and Indonesians after Tsunami 2004 and rescue of MV Suez crew from Pirates in 2011.
PN is still maintaining its presence near Yemen and remains committed to ensure further evacuation of stranded Pakistanis as well as foreign nationals on humanitarian grounds.
