A delegation led by US Ambassador Richard G Olson on Wednesday called on the Federal Minister for Petroleum Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. The US delegation included Daniela A Ballard, Counsellor for Economic Affairs and Michael R Curtis, Director, Office of Energy, USAID Pakistan and met with the Federal Minister and with Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Resources, Arshad Mirza.
The meeting focused on the upcoming US-Pakistan Energy Working Group meeting to be held in Islamabad from April 29-30.
US Ambassador Olson apprised the Federal Minister that the US delegation would be led by the US Special Envoy and Co-ordinator for International Energy Affairs, Amos Hochstein. The focus of the upcoming discussions would be on clean energy sources - gas and renewables.
The Energy Working Group meeting last took place in November 2013 in Washington chaired by the previous Special Envoy and Co-ordinator for International Energy Affairs Ambassador Carlos Pascual, Minister of Petroleum Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Minister of Water and Power Khawaja Asif.
The US Ambassador appreciated the progress Pakistan had made in several areas since the last Energy Working Group including the first delivery of liquefied natural gas (LNG) at a new import terminal at Port Qasim.
The Federal Minister highlighted that the LNG currently being imported was expected to result in savings to Pakistan of over 750 million dollars through replacement of imported liquid fuels by the power generation sector.
During the meeting the progress of USAID initiatives supporting Pakistan's E&P sector was also reviewed with the Federal Minister expressing satisfaction on the efforts of USAID.-PR
