Federal government is contemplating to establish a state of the art wool development company with twin objectives to increase income of shepherds in addition to enhancing the exports of value added wool products, said Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan, Federal Minister for Food Security. Addressing a seminar on world food day at National Textile University (NTU), he said that the proposed company will seek international collaboration from Australia and other developed countries for the development and uplift of this neglected segment of the economy.
He said that federal and provincial governments with active support of donor agencies will work to create much needed economic activities in backward areas of the countries. This project will also serve as main-streaming of backward and neglected areas of Balochistan, he added.
Continuing, the minister said that Balochistan and other backward areas of the country are flooded by abject poverty despite of having plenty of untapped potential in different fields. He said that the proposed company will also work to enhance conducive environment in these areas for development of wool industry on modern scientific lines. The minister hoped that Wool Development Company will prove to be a game changer for the province of Balochistan which has vast and virgin tracks for cattle farming.
Dr Abdul Malik Baloch, Chief Minister of Balochistan in his speech said that biggest province of Pakistan is smouldering with poverty despite of having unlimited national resources. He said that government was making serious efforts to bring a qualitative improvement in the life of people living in remote areas of Balochistan. He also welcomed the proposed wool development company and assured full support from the government for its establishment.
Later on request of Rector NTU, Dr Mumtaz Hassan Malik, the chief minister Balochistan accompanied with federal food minister and visited various sections of the university. They appreciated the co-operation of National Textile University and hoped that they will work to-gather to achieve the objective of the progress and prosperity of the country.
Miss Marjon Fredrix Manager International Project FAO, Ahmed J. Essa, Deputy Chief, National Project Co-ordinator FAO, Nasir Mughal, National Expert, Community Development, Dr Zulfiqar Ali (NTU) and Muhammad Iqbal, Post Harvest Management Adviser AFO also addressed the seminar.
